Making the leap to homeschool your teenager during their GCSE or A-Level years can feel overwhelming. Whether you are doing it for their mental health, special educational needs, or just a desire for more flexible learning, you are not alone. Online homeschooling has become increasingly popular in the UK.

Here is a simple, step-by-step guide to making online homeschooling work for your family in 2026.

1. The Legal First Steps

If your child is currently at a standard state or private school, you cannot just stop sending them. You need to officially withdraw them.

  • Write a letter: Send a formal letter or email to the headteacher stating you are taking your child out to practice Elective Home Education (EHE).
  • The school’s job: The school must accept this and remove your child from the register. They will notify the Local Authority (your local council).
  • The council’s job: The council might reach out to check that you are providing a “suitable” education. Don’t panic—this is normal. You can show them the online platforms or tutors you are using.

2. Choosing the Right Online School

“Online homeschooling” can mean a few different things. You need to pick the style that fits your teenager best.

  • Live Online Schools: These run just like normal schools but on a screen. Students log in at a specific time, listen to a teacher live, and chat with classmates.
  • Flexible Platforms: These provide pre-recorded videos, reading materials, and assignments. Your teen can work at their own pace, day or night.
  • Mix and Match: Many parents buy textbooks, use free resources like BBC Bitesize, and hire specific online tutors for tricky subjects.

3. Booking Exams (The Most Important Part)

When you homeschool, the government does not arrange your child’s exams. You have to do it.

  • Private Candidates: Your child will take their exams as a “private candidate.”
  • Find a Centre: You need to find an exam centre (often a local school or a dedicated private centre) that accepts private candidates.
  • Book Early: Exam centres fill up fast. For summer exams, you usually need to book by January or February of that year.
  • The Cost: Be prepared to pay. Exams usually cost between £100 and £300 per subject, and science subjects with practicals can cost much more.

4. When to Call in the Experts (Tutors)

You do not need to know everything about every subject to homeschool. That is a common myth! It is perfectly okay to outsource subjects you find confusing.

In fact, highly technical subjects often require a professional. You will very likely need a tutor for Computer Science. At both the GCSE and A-Level stages, Computer Science involves complex programming projects and specific theoretical knowledge. A dedicated tutor can guide your teen through coding languages (like Python), help them understand how computers work on a hardware level, and ensure their non-exam assessments (coursework) meet the strict exam board standards.

5. Social Life and Screen Time

A big worry for parents is that their teenager will be stuck behind a screen all day with no friends.

  • Set a Schedule: Ensure they have a clear start and end to their school day.
  • Join Local Groups: Search Facebook or local community boards for home education meetups in your area.
  • Keep Up Hobbies: Encourage them to join local sports teams, drama clubs, or volunteer groups. Socializing outside of an academic setting is fantastic for their wellbeing.

Homeschooling through the vital exam years is a big commitment, but with the right online tools and support, it can be an incredibly rewarding path for your child’s future.
